In today’s digital world, powerful AI models can be incredibly useful for businesses and developers. What’s even better is when the developers share an API you can use on your side for personal or business use. In this article, we’ll explore the ChatGPT API, how to get an API key, what it can do, the cost, and how businesses can use it.
What is an ChatGPT API?
An API, or application programming interface, is like a bridge that allows different software programs to communicate with each other. It simplifies the process of sharing information and requesting data between software components.
For example, without the API, you can simply use ChatGPT, as it’s meant to be used by the public. But with the API, you can integrate ChatGPT into your apps. You could build a chatbot based on ChatGPT, create a plugin based on the API, and more.
Getting an API Key
To use the ChatGPT API, you’ll need an API key, which is a straightforward process:
- Sign up or log in to your usual OpenAI account.
- Click on the Personal tab on the top right, and then click on “View API Keys”
- Click on “Create a new key
- Save it somewhere safe!
Please note that depending on demand, there could be a waitlist to access the API, or this option may be unavailable.
The ChatGPT API is available in most countries, except the following: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Laos, Libya, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.
How much does it cost?
You can use the API for free for a short while, as OpenAI will give you $5 worth of token credit. After that, you’ll be billed at the end of each calendar month.
There’s a limit to the use of the API, and you are limited in terms of requests per minute (RPM) and tokens per minute (TPM).
Free trial users: 20 RPM and 40000 TPM
- Pay-as-you-go users (first 48 hours): 60 RPM and 60,000 TPM
- Pay-as-you-go users (after 48 hours): 3500 RPM and 90,000 TPM
- 8K context $0.03 / 1K tokens to $0.06 / 1K tokens
- 32K context $0.06 / 1K tokens to $0.12 / 1K tokens
- 4K context $0.0015 / 1K tokens to $0.002 / 1K tokens
- 16K context $0.003 / 1K tokens to $0.004 / 1K tokens
Practical Business Uses
If you have one, you’re probably wondering how to use the API for your business. You can begin creating applications powered by the ChatGPT API by directly utilizing the API endpoint or employing the OpenAI Python/Node.js library.
It’s important to note that OpenAI does not validate the security of third-party libraries maintained by the community. Therefore, it is advisable to directly access the API endpoint or utilize the official OpenAI Python/Node.js library for enhanced security and reliability.
The API can be used to build custom chatbots with the help of Python. It can also handle customer support requests (after being programmed to do so). Mobile apps and browser extensions can be created, and the API can be integrated. ChatGPT can be used to answer customer questions before human help is needed.
ChatGPT can detect and sort queries based on language and translate them. If trained properly, ChatGPT can assess queries and decide which ones should be escalated or handled first. ChatGPT can analyze customer service data and determine the most common problems customers have. If ChatGPT is given access to order tracking, it can help customers get answers on the status of their orders without human intervention.
