The word “prompt” refers to giving instructions or cues to someone to guide them toward a desired outcome. Prompting in Midjourney, your text prompt cues the AI system on what type of image to generate based on the description you provide.
A text prompt is a descriptive set of words and phrases that you input into Midjourney to generate an AI image.
Basic Prompting In Midjourney
The words in your prompt act as instructions that tell Midjourney what kind of image you want it to create.
Basic Prompt Structure
A basic prompt structure in Midjourney generally includes at least some of the following elements:
Subject – The main focus or topic of the image
Action – What the subject is doing
Setting: where the image takes place
Color – Colors used in the image
Lighting – How the lighting looks
Style: Artistic style like photorealistic or cartoon Parameters – Technical settings like portrait or landscape For example, a prompt could be structured as:
\[Subject\] \[action\] in a \[setting\], \[lighting\], \[color\]. \[style\] — \ [parameters\]
Here is a template prompt using this structure:
\[hummingbird\] \[eating nectar\] in \[a serene English garden\], [sunrise\] \[vibrant pastel colors\], \[minimalist naive art\] — \[16:9 portrait\]
While you don’t have to use everything in the template, and it is not the only way to prompt, it’s a good place to get started. I always suggest at least the three S’s of subject-setting Style
Tips for Writing Effective Prompts in Midjourney
- Place important words like subject and/or style at the beginning, depending on what is most important in the image. – Be concise by removing unnecessary words
- Use strong, descriptive words that convey meaning
- Break up ideas into short phrases or sentences
- Commas to separate different concepts
- Capitalization has no effect
- Write in logical English, but if you can drop a word like “a” or “the” and still make sense, then do it.
- Midjourney is not Chat GPT; describe, don’t tell.
Building a Prompt, Step-by-Step
Let’s go through building a prompt using the template:
/imagine prompt: hummingbird
This looks great, right? But we can do better.
Action: eating nectar
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar
Setting: in a serene English garden
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene English garden
Well that’s given us a fair amount of foliage
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene English garden, sunrise
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene english garden, sunrise, pastel
That’s a bit pale. Let’s try again
Color: vibrant pastel
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene english garden, sunrise, vibrant pastel
Hello, I’m awake now!
Beautiful result with this color but let’s keep going
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene English garden, sunrise vibrant pastel, minimalist
Things get pretty busy in Midjourney Minimalists can be your friend. This is a gorgeous image but it needs a twist
Style: minimalist, naive art
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene English garden, sunrise, vibrant pastel, minimalist naive art
Now we are talking, this is much better.
Parameters: 16:9 portrait
/imagine prompt: hummingbird eating nectar in a serene English garden, sunrise, vibrant pastel, minimalist naive art —ar 16:9
ar is a parameter that tells the AI what aspect ratio we want, in this case, 16:9, a popular aspect ratio for YouTube.
Our final choice:
/imagine prompt: hummingbird hovering in a serene English garden, vibrant pastel colors, minimalist naive art style –ar 16:9
Starting with this basic structure and making tweaks and adjustments as you experiment is a great way for beginners to learn how to craft effective prompts in Midjourney.
