Meta Opens Meta Quest Operating System to Third-Party Hardware Makers

Meta has announced a significant development in its quest to create a more open computing platform for the metaverse.

The company is opening up the operating system that powers its Meta Quest devices to third-party hardware makers.

This move aims to provide developers with a larger ecosystem to build for and offer consumers more choice.

The new hardware ecosystem will run on Meta Horizon OS, the mixed-reality operating system that powers Meta Quest headsets.

This operating system combines core technologies for mixed reality experiences with features emphasizing social presence.

Meta Horizon OS results from a decade of investment in mixed reality technologies.

Meta has developed technologies such as inside-out tracking, self-tracked controllers, and hand, eye, face, and body tracking.

These advancements enable the blending of digital and physical worlds.

Developers and creators can leverage Meta Horizon OS technologies to create mixed-reality experiences and reach audiences through content discovery and monetization platforms like the Meta Horizon Store.

Meta Horizon OS integrates social features into apps, allowing people’s identities, avatars, social graphs, and friend groups to move across virtual spaces.

It bridges multiple platforms, enabling interactions across mixed reality, mobile, and desktop devices.

Leading technology companies like ASUS, Lenovo, and Xbox are partnering with Meta to develop new devices built on Meta Horizon OS.

These devices will target gaming, productivity, learning, and entertainment.

Meta’s partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. will enhance the development of new devices as Qualcomm builds Snapdragon processors that are tightly integrated with Meta’s software and hardware stacks.

Meta is removing barriers between the Meta Horizon Store and App Lab, allowing easier discovery of App Lab titles.

A new spatial app framework will also help mobile developers create mixed-reality experiences.

Opening Meta Horizon OS to more device makers and expanding app development options will benefit both consumers and developers.

This move will foster an ecosystem where multiple hardware makers build on a common platform to bring mixed reality to more people.
