Google merges Android and hardware teams for AI

Google is merging its platform and hardware teams to create a unified Platform and Devices unit. 

This consolidation combines key divisions under one umbrella, including Android and Pixel, aiming to streamline development efforts and foster greater synergy between software and hardware initiatives.

Rick Osterloh, who previously served as the Senior Vice President of devices and services, is leading this new division. 

In an interview, Osterloh emphasized that the integration is driven by a strategic focus on artificial intelligence (AI). 

Google aims to facilitate faster innovation across the entire product stack. 

AI is a central pillar, and it combines Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS platform development with hardware projects like Pixel devices.

The consolidation also marks the team’s arrival of Google veteran AI researcher Jay Yagnik. 

Yagnik’s role will be crucial in bridging the gap between AI research and product development, enabling smoother integration of advanced AI capabilities into Google’s products. 

With Yagnik’s expertise, Google anticipates a more seamless implementation of features of new AI models in its apps and hardware offerings.

Meanwhile, Hiroshi Lockheimer, who previously led the development of Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS, will be transitioning to undisclosed projects within Google and its parent company, Alphabet. 

Lockheimer’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of Google’s software platforms, and his continued involvement underscores the company’s commitment to innovation across various fronts.
