Chinese Scientists Create Energy-Efficient “Brain-On-A-Chip” AI Microchips

Chinese scientists have recently introduced what they assert to be the most energy-efficient AI microchips in the world. 

These chips are small enough to be seamlessly integrated into everyday devices such as smartphones and offer the potential to enable innovative offline functionalities, including voice control and mind control.

The research was led by Professor Zhou Jun and his team from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). 

The breakthrough stems from a concerted effort to drastically reduce power consumption through algorithmic refinement and architectural optimization. 

Presented at the prestigious 2024 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), the breakthrough marks a significant milestone in chip technology.

The first of the two AI chips showcased at the conference was tailored for offline voice control applications. 

Demonstrating remarkable prowess in keyword spotting and speaker verification, this chip sets itself apart by adeptly discerning the voice signals of a target speaker.

Even amidst loud surroundings with background noise from television, music, or conversations, it sorts through them to identify the voice signal.

The researchers highlight that what sets this chip apart is its remarkable ability to maintain accuracy rates of over 95 percent in quiet environments and 90 percent in busy settings while consuming less than two microjoules per instance. 

These achievements establish new global benchmarks for energy efficiency and accuracy and position the chip as a game-changer for various applications, including smart homes, wearable gadgets, and interactive toys.

The team’s second offering, unveiled alongside its counterpart at the ISSCC, is tailor-made for detecting seizure signals in individuals grappling with epilepsy.

Engineered to integrate into wearable devices, this cutting-edge technology leverages electroencephalogram (EEG) recognition to identify epileptic seizures and promptly alert patients for necessary medical intervention.

Unlike its predecessors, which necessitated extensive patient seizure data for training, the chip harnesses improved feature extraction techniques and on-chip learning engines to achieve unparalleled efficiency. 

With an average recognition energy consumption of a mere 0.07 microjoules, it promises swift detection of seizures and significantly mitigates the time and costs associated with training.

During a compelling demonstration at the ISSCC, EEG signals captured by a wearable brain-computer interface device were seamlessly transmitted in real time to a test board via Bluetooth technology. 

The chip, reprogrammed to recognize imagined motor commands, bestowed users with the remarkable ability to orchestrate a robot’s movements with mere thoughts, directing it to move forward, halt, or reverse course at will.

Excitingly, the potential applications of this chip extend far beyond seizure detection, encompassing a myriad of possibilities in the realm of brain-computer interfaces and sleep monitoring.
