China Advances in Laser-Powered Submarine Technology

Researchers at Harbin Engineering University in China have significantly progressed in developing a submarine laser propulsion system. 

This system employs lasers to generate plasma underwater, propelling the submarine forward. 

The concept, initially proposed by Japanese researchers two decades ago, has been developing in China for over ten years.

The recent breakthroughs, detailed in a paper published in the Chinese journal Acta Optica Sinica, involve the application of thin optical fibers to coat submarines. 

These fibers emit laser power, producing thrust and inducing “supercavitation,” which reduces water resistance. 

The project, spearheaded by Ge Yang, an assistant professor at Harbin Engineering University, aims to enhance submarine speed and efficiency with potential military applications.

Despite the promising prospects, the technology faces several challenges. 

These include managing heat dissipation of optical fibers, enduring high-power and high-salinity environments, and adapting steering and control systems for underwater use.

However, these advancements align with global trends towards electric propulsion and could contribute to military and civilian marine operations, including environmentally friendly shipping initiatives.

This development coincides with China’s heightened military focus, with President Xi Jinping advocating for the rapid modernization of the People’s Liberation Army. 

This includes initiatives like establishing an Information Support Force to bolster China’s capabilities in information warfare, reflecting broader strategic ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region.

The research conducted at Harbin Engineering University represents a significant step forward in submarine propulsion technology. 

Researchers aim to revolutionize submarine travel by harnessing the power of lasers to create plasma and induce supercavitation. This innovation can potentially enhance submarines’ speed and stealth capabilities, paving the way for new military strategies and tactics.
