BMW Launches Hydrogen-Powered iX5 Fleet: A Milestone in Green Mobility

After years of anticipation, BMW has officially rolled out its pioneering hydrogen-operated BMW iX5 fleet, marking a significant leap forward in sustainable mobility. Launching these vehicles signals a crucial phase in developing hydrogen fuel cell technology, positioning BMW at the forefront of the race towards emission-free transportation.

In a statement, BMW announced the commencement of practical operations for the iX5 Hydrogen models following four years of rigorous development. This fleet, slated for global deployment throughout the year, aims to provide invaluable insights into the real-world performance and user experience of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, underscored the importance of hydrogen as a versatile energy source, asserting its pivotal role in the transition to renewable energy and climate protection. Zipse emphasized, “Hydrogen is one of the most efficient ways of storing and transporting renewable energies. We should also use this potential to accelerate the transformation of the mobility sector.”

The deployment of the iX5 Hydrogen fleet represents a strategic move by BMW to expedite the transformation of the mobility sector. With a focus on sustainability, BMW is leveraging its expertise in electric drive technologies to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology as a viable option for zero-emission transportation.

BMW’s proprietary fuel cell system is central to the iX5 Hydrogen’s innovation, a testament to the company’s pioneering spirit and commitment to sustainability. This system facilitates a chemical reaction between gaseous hydrogen and ambient air, powering the vehicle remarkably efficiently.

Collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation has been instrumental in fuel cell development, with BMW leveraging Toyota’s expertise to enhance performance and reliability. The iX5 Hydrogen boasts impressive performance metrics, featuring a powertrain with a maximum output of 295 kW / 401 hp, coupled with a high-performance lithium-ion battery. These components, combined with two 700-bar CFRP hydrogen tanks, enable the vehicle to achieve a range of 504 km in the WLTP cycle, with refueling taking only three to four minutes.

Production of the iX5 Hydrogen is underway at BMW’s Munich Research and Innovation Centre, where a team of over 900 specialists is dedicated to ensuring both product quality and production efficiency. The meticulous assembly process underscores BMW’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge, sustainable mobility solutions.
