Artificial Intelligence To Track Space Debris, Promising Safer Skies

Researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to address the threat of space debris cluttering Earth’s orbit. A recent study published in IET Radar, Sonar & Navigation highlights the You-Only-Look-Once (YOLO) algorithm as an innovative solution in space monitoring.

The increasing number of space objects (SO), debris, and constellations of satellites in Low-Earth Orbit pose a significant threat to the sustainability and safety of space operations, which must be addressed to avoid mutual collisions. Space situational awareness is currently discussed by radar and radio telescopes that detect and track SO.

Tracking these minuscule fragments has proven difficult, with traditional methods often failing due to debris’s sheer volume and speed. Enter AI, a cutting-edge technology that promises to revolutionize space debris management.

The research team, led by Federica Massimi, utilized Europe’s Tracking and Imaging Radar system to generate training and testing data for object detection tasks. By employing the YOLO algorithm, renowned for its efficiency in object detection, the team aimed to develop a faster and more accurate method of tracking space debris.

Unlike traditional approaches that require multiple passes or sliding windows, YOLO enables real-time object detection in a single neural network pass. This efficiency was tested in a simulated environment mimicking real-world conditions, where the YOLO-based detection system outperformed classical methods. Notably, it achieved a higher detection rate while maintaining a low rate of false alarms, marking a significant breakthrough in space surveillance capabilities.
