AI Creates Jobs: Study Suggests

Have you ever wondered why there’s so much fear surrounding the idea that AI might take away people’s jobs? It’s a question that has sparked intense debate and concern in recent years. People fear AI’s potential to replace human workers because of its ability to automate tasks more efficiently and effectively than humans, leading to widespread job displacement.

“Creative destruction” is a big idea in economics. Coined by Joseph Schumpeter in 1942, it means that change is constant, and old ways of doing things are constantly replaced by new ones.

This often leads to old jobs disappearing, but because innovation drives this process, it creates new jobs. Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to be a significant innovation this decade, so what kinds of jobs could AI create?

According to a recent report from the World Economic Forum titled “Jobs of Tomorrow: Large Language Models and Jobs,” there are three main areas where new jobs could emerge: “trainers,” “explainers,” and “sustainers.”

1. Trainers:

These are the people developing AI, including engineers and scientists working on large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. It’s not just programmers creating algorithms; there’s also demand for electrical engineers to design customized microchips for training and running LLMs.

2. Explainers:

While trainers work behind the scenes, explainers make AI user-friendly. They design interfaces for people to interact with AI, similar to user experience designers for LLMs. This involves making technical AI accessible to the general public and creating tailored AI assistants or tutors.

3. Sustainers:

These individuals ensure AI systems are used effectively. They include content creators who write prompts for LLMs, data curators who ensure high-quality training data, and ethics/governance specialists who prevent biased or harmful AI behavior.

The report suggests that AI and machine learning specialists will see significant job growth in the next five years, along with opportunities in education and healthcare. However, jobs focused on something other than language-related tasks or requiring personal interaction are less likely to be impacted by AI.

Adopting generative AI like LLMs will change the nature of work, displacing some jobs but creating many new ones. Businesses and governments need to prepare for this transition and ensure that everyone benefits from the potential of AI. The report recommends actions outlined in the Presidio Recommendations on Responsible Generative AI, emphasizing collaboration and social progress.
