Presenting an AI Approach to Combat Retail Organized Crime

In a landmark partnership, NVIDIA collaborates with the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) and multiple AI pioneers to unveil an advanced solution to tackle organized retail crime (ORC) in real time. This innovative collaboration introduces a system that proactively alerts authorities to suspicious activities inside and outside retail stores, enabling swift intervention.

At the helm of this initiative is the LPRC, a coalition comprising asset-protection executives from over 85 major retail chains globally, alongside law enforcement agencies, consumer goods companies, and technology partners. Their goal? To pioneer joint efforts within the retail sector, targeting the reduction of shrinkage—loss of inventory due to factors other than sales—and enhancing safety and security measures across stores and shopping centers.

The growing threat of flash mobs and smash-and-grab thefts looms large, inflicting billions in losses upon retailers annually and triggering concerns over the safety of patrons and staff alike. Brazen heists orchestrated by crime syndicates, often peddling stolen goods on illicit markets, worsen these challenges.

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, shrinkage amounted to a staggering $112 billion in 2022, with an estimated two-thirds attributed to theft. Alarmingly, instances of violence and aggression associated with organized crime theft are on the rise, as reported by 67% of respondents.

The AI-powered solution—a game-changer in the battle against elusive and rapidly moving criminal groups. Leveraging cutting-edge technology from leading AI firms, the system, anchored on the NVIDIA Metropolis application framework and microservices, delivers advanced capabilities such as product recognition, anomaly detection, and vehicle identification.

This solution comprises several essential components, including AiFi’s behavior anomaly detection and item tracking, BriefCam’s video analytics based on deep learning technology, including license plate recognition, and SureView’s centralized security management platform. By providing real-time notifications and valuable insights to retailers’ command centers, this integrated approach enables teams to react promptly and improve their asset protection efforts.

“The ORC solution powered by AI is a result of the collaboration between LPRC, a leading loss prevention organization, and NVIDIA, a company with profound AI capabilities,” says Read Hayes, who serves as a research scientist and criminologist at the University of Florida and leads the LPRC. “By working together across industries, we aim to provide retailers with the tools they need to combat organized retail crime effectively.”

As the retail industry continues to evolve, companies such as AiFi, based in Silicon Valley, BriefCam, headquartered in Newton, and SureView, located in Tampa, develop innovative solutions powered by NVIDIA Metropolis SDKs. These companies are at the forefront of advancing store security and introducing a new era of integrated AI technologies specifically designed to tackle the challenges of the modern retail environment.
